This video shows a Persian rug with a large hole. First the hole is cleaned up, then new warps are sewn in. The next stage is to fix it to a frame, so that the correct tension can be achieved. Then the knotting starts, using very carefully selected wools. It is vital to get the correct colours. Invariably we use wools of the same age as the rug, and even from the same region where the rug was originally made.
Once all the knots are done, the repair is trimmed, and sewn at the back to secure it to the rest of the carpet.
It’s a very time-consuming job, but an invisible repair is a thing of beauty.
