The Yarns
The Yarns
For Persians, the carpet occupies a central feature in the home. They sit on the carpet to entertain guests, to eat, to play music, to sing, and to read poetry. There is a physical contact. The guests are seated on the finest carpet, hence the saying “If you haven’t got a carpet, you cannot receive guests, and a guest is a gift from God”.
They are rightly proud of their culture and wisdom, passed down not only through rug weaving, but through their architecture, music, and the humorous stories of Mullah Nasreddin.
In the large carpet factories, the designs used to be sung out in a kind of code for the weavers! No paper patterns were used. Even today, tribal women and their daughters often use no formal patterns.
We aim to pass on some of these traditions in our workshops, giving you a rich environment in which to enjoy learning this ancient craft.
